Museums have produced video and digital media for decades—but what does it mean to design media that sustains voice over time?

In an era of AI-generated content, rapidly changing platforms, and evolving expectations around accessibility, museums must think beyond how voice is captured to how it is mediated, translated, maintained, and trusted.

This session proposes thinking about media as infrastructure rather than a collection of one-off assets. A video may begin as a conversation, but audiences experience that voice through layers of interviewing, editing, translation, captioning, interface design, distribution, and technology. Each decision shapes what audiences hear, understand, and trust.

Drawing from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s Artist Voices initiative, developed for the museum's expansion which opened on June 6, 2026, this session explores how first-person artist media can be designed to retain meaning across in-gallery experiences, web platforms, social media, and future reuse. It will examine a challenge familiar across museum digital work: what happens when content moves beyond the context for which it was originally created?

The session will give particular attention to agency and authorship through media featuring Indigenous artists Nicholas Galanin and Teri Greeves. How can museums preserve cultural specificity and complexity as interviews are edited, translated, excerpted, and adapted for different audiences and platforms? What responsibilities do institutions have when shaping and sustaining another person’s voice?

Alongside these questions, the session will share practical approaches to creating more durable media ecosystems, including accessible captioning and translation, standardized media formats, multi-platform production planning, documentation, and collaboration across content, design, technology, and installation teams.

Attendees will leave with a framework for approaching digital media as durable and trustworthy infrastructure—balancing authenticity, accessibility, technological change, and long-term stewardship.
